The 2004 season got off to a flying start at the first round of Super 1 at Buckmore Park. In the pouring rain Barnaby was on grid three after only dropping five points through the heats, in the final though chasing for the lead eventually made a couple of mistakes which put him back to fourth at the end of the race.
The second round brought on a really bad patch that would last for a few race meetings. The day didn't start too bad, Barnaby was in the top few in practice, and then came the first heat where Barnaby was involved in a tangle through no fault of his own, this put him back to last and a third of a lap behind, but then coming back into the top fifteen. The second heat saw an exclusion for a "technical infringement". Then came a mediocre 3rd heat and final.
The next round at Larkhall proved to be a disaster, badly struggling for power, eventually finding the pace when it was too late. This was after three diabollical heats, but even after finding the pace in th B final, luck proved not to be on Barnaby's side, being launched into the tyres not even after half a lap.
The next meeting was a break from the Super 1 series , this was Kartmasters at PFI, which would prove to be some useful testing. This was another average meeting where Barnaby made some awesome starts with the kart working well which would get him up the order, only for the serious lack of power to drop him back down the field. Eventually not starting the final due to an engine failure.
Next came another big non - Super 1 meeting inthe form of the TKM Fetsival at Kimbolton. This meeting proved to be the start of a comeback. 9th After timed qualifying, followed by a seventh from grid 21! Then disaster struck, a DNF put Barnaby in the coupe de wanker, after a change to the spare engine Barnaby struggled with a lack of power once again!!
Back to the Super 1 series and a full comeback to form at a track where we were expecting to struggle. With really bad grids of 18, 19, and 5, Barnaby had a 12th, 8th, and 3rd respectively and ended up on grid 13. After coming off on the first lap, Barnaby came back to 12th from 30th! PIcking up the fastest lap on the way.
Final round came at Whilton Mill, where the race meeting effectively started a week earlier with 3rd place in a strong field in the preceding club meeting. Two days of vigorous testing led to a sparkling win from grid 6 in the first heat, followed by a competent effort for 8th place from grid 19. The last race was a disaster with 18th from grid 13 in the wet on a kart struggling for any form of grip. 6th place in this heat would have been enough for pole position in the final, but instead it was grid 14.
Surviving a fraught first corner Barnaby battled with the pack and driving rain for 16 laps to finish a comfortable 5th and closing rapidly on fourth place. So ended a Super One season where Barnaby was top seed from 2003, but finished outside of the seeded drivers in 18th place.
